Transforming Lives with Faith and Dedication: An Interview with Lilli Parker, Director of Bakersfield Senior Center
Introduction At Bakersfield Senior Center, Director Lilli Parker has created a space where seniors can thrive through care, community, and faith. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Lilli to learn more about her journey and vision for the center.
Inspiration and Journey Lilli's journey began with a prayer and a desire to serve the Kingdom of God. After a 28-year career at the telephone company, she was offered the position of Director at Bakersfield Senior Center. Initially hesitant, Lilli embraced the role with faith and determination, transforming the center piece by piece.
Challenges and Success Despite the initial challenges of disorganization, Lilli's commitment to excellence and her faith propelled her forward. With the support of councilman Willie Rivera and Mr. Saldona, Lilli successfully navigated funding opportunities and began the center's revitalization.
The Heart of Bakersfield Senior Center: Community and Care Under Lilli's leadership, the center has become a mixed-use facility, offering meals, activities, and a sense of family to approximately 100-125 people daily. The center is also undergoing exciting renovations, thanks to partnerships with the city and housing authority.
Services and Innovations Lilli is particularly proud of the center's Diabetic and Dance Classes. As an instructor, she empowers seniors with the knowledge and tools to manage their health effectively. The center's mission is to improve the health and well-being of low-income and underserved seniors.
Future Plans and Vision The Bakersfield Senior Center is set to undergo major renovations, including the addition of 36 units of affordable senior housing. Lilli's vision extends beyond the center, aiming to transform the community and impact lives positively.
