Celebrating Community Champions: Justina Howell’s Journey in Veterans Outreach

I am so pleased to introduce a deep dive into one of the most interesting and influential individuals: Justina Howell of Bakersfield Community Healthcare. As the lead of the wellness program Boogie with BCH, Justina travels to many senior living communities conducting her movement-to-music classes for the residents.

I caught up with Justina at Brookdale to observe one of her sessions. As I approached the class, lively music and laughter filled the hallways. The class was filled with 15 young-at-heart residents tapping their feet, clapping their hands, and smiling from ear to ear. I tried to focus on my notes but found myself tapping to the beat, nodding my head, and dancing in my chair.

Justina does a wonderful job involving all residents in her movement class, offering something for all levels of ability. As she puts it, she likes to trigger happy moments for the residents and show them that they are still valued. The classes are deliberately labeled as movement to music, not exercise, to overcome the stigma of working out. They always end with the remarkable song "You Are My Sunshine."

After the class, I sat down with Justina for a quick interview to dive deeper into her motivations. It is clear to see that Justina cares deeply. She explained that her sense of caring was passed down from her parents. Her father, a Vietnam Navy veteran, was known as the King of Second Chances and always helped those in need, both inside and outside their family. Justina's commitment to giving back and making a difference is a beautiful legacy from her upbringing.

Join us in celebrating Justina Howell and her incredible work in bringing joy and value to our senior community.
